How to install MassSorter

Minimum Requirements

MassSorter has been tested on MS Windows 98, MS Windows XP, MS Windows 2000 and Linux (OS: CentOS) with java version 1.6. But since Java is platform independent, MassSorter should run on most other setups as well.

Installing Java

MassSorter is a Java-program and in order to run Java programs, Java must be installed. MassSorter requires Java 1.6 (also referred to as Java 6.0). To install Java, do the following:

  1. Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp and find the newest version of Java.

  2. Download the JRE version of Java for your platform.

  3. After downloading, run the downloaded file and follow the instructions. The default choices should be ok.

Installing Java 3D

In order to use the 3D modeling tool in MassSorter, Java 3D also has to be installed. MassSorter will work without installing Java 3D, but the 3D modelling will the obviously not be available. To install Java 3D, do the following:

  1. Go to: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/downloads/index.html

  2. Download the latest JRE version of Java 3D.

  3. After downloading, run the downloaded file and follow the instructions. The default choices should be ok.

If you download the windows version of Java 3D it is also recommended to update to the latest version of DirectX. This can be done by using the "Windows update"-option, or the latest version can be downloaded at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx

Installing MassSorter

(It is assumed that Java 1.6 is installed.)

To install MassSorter:
  1. Create a folder called MassSorter.

  2. Put the zip-file in the created folder.

  3. Unzip the contents of the zip file into the MassSorter folder.

It is important that all the contents of the zip file is extracted and not just the executable MassSorter jar file. To guarantee correct unzipping of the zip file, it is recommended to use an unzip wizard. These are normally accessed by right clicking on the zip file and select "Extract here" (or a similar option).

Three folders and a *.jar file will appear.
The *.jar file is the program file.

  4. To run MassSorter on Windows double-click on the *.jar file.
(Or you can run it from a terminal with the following line:
    java -jar "MassSorter v3.1.jar".)

After installation it is recommended to start by going through the tutorial.

If you decide to make a shortcut to MassSorter, please use the icon in the zip-file (MassSorter.ico).

Known Installation Issues

If you have difficulties installing MassSorter, these are the four known issues:

  • Trying to start MassSorter from within the zip file:

Before starting MassSorter it is important to first unzip all the contents of the zip file. Starting MassSorter from within the zip file will result in an incorrect installation of the program because all the MassSorter system files will not be found.

If you, when starting MassSorter, get messages saying that certain system files can not be found, you have probably not unzipped the zip file correctly.

  • MassSorter can not be run from a path containing special characters (e.g. , , ):

To fix this problem rename the folder in the path containing the characters or move MassSorter to a different path containing no special characters.

  • On Linux MassSorter can not be run from a path containing spaces (e.g. "/Home/My Folder/MassSorter/"):

To fix this problem rename the folder in the path containing one or more spaces or move MassSorter to a different path containing no spaces.

  • Java is not installed correctly or the Java version is too old:

MassSorter requires Java 1.6 in order to run. See the "Installing Java" section above for how to obtain and install Java.
