Lipo can analyse polypeptide sequences encoded within the genome of Gram-negative bacteria and report the sequences with a possible lipo-box. The lipo-box is recognised on the basis of the critera given by Lipo.

Criteria for lipoprotein recognition

A pattern that recognises the lipo-box:

The conserved cysteine in the lipo-box must be located between position 15 and 35 of the sequence under consideration.

No charged amino acids (D, E, R, K) were accepted in the six positions immediately N-terminal to the lipo-box (-5 to -10).

At least one positively charged amino acid (R, K) was required in front of the -10 position.
